Chaharshanbe Suri (Fire Festival)

The Persian fire festival — jumping over flames on the last Tuesday before Nowruz.

March 17

Why It Matters

Chaharshanbe Suri ('Red Wednesday') is one of the most ancient fire festivals in the world. People jump over bonfires chanting 'Give me your red glow, take my pallor' — surrendering sickness to the purifying fire.

How It Is Observed

Bonfires in streets, jumping over flames with ritual chant, loud banging of pots (Qashoq-Zani), children in disguise going door to door, eating Ajil-e Moshkel-Gosha (seven dried fruits and nuts).
