Diwali (Mahavira Nirvana)

Jain Diwali — commemorating Lord Mahavira's attainment of Moksha (liberation).

October 20Lunar calendar

Why It Matters

While Diwali is celebrated across many religions, for Jains it specifically marks the Nirvana (liberation) of Lord Mahavira on this night in 527 BCE. The lamps lit by Jains symbolize the inner light of wisdom that guides the soul toward liberation.

How It Is Observed

Lighting lamps in Jain temples and homes, prayers and meditation, Jain New Year celebrations begin the day after (Pratipada), recitation of Mahavira's teachings.
